Friendly Food Club Mascot Volunteer

Age requirement: 18+
Location: One off weekday and/or weekend events and activities across Dorset and BCP
Transport: Own transport essential
Role type: Voluntary

About the role

Friendly Food Club supports people of all ages to develop a positive relationship with food through cooking, food education and fun, practical experiences.

We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to bring our Friendly Food Club mascot to life at community events, family activities and public engagement sessions. You’ll help us catch people’s attention, create smiles and start conversations about food in a fun and approachable way.

What you’ll be doing

  • Wearing the Friendly Food Club mascot costume at events and activities.

  • Waving, dancing, posing for photographs and interacting playfully with children, families and members of the public.

  • Helping to hand out recipe cards, stickers and other promotional materials.

  • Working alongside Friendly Food Club staff to engage visitors and promote our work.

  • Helping create a welcoming, positive and memorable experience for everyone you meet.

  • Following our mascot safety guidance, including taking breaks when needed and maintaining appropriate boundaries when interacting with children and the public.

What we’re looking for

You don’t need previous mascot experience — just the right attitude!

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Friendly and approachable: happy to interact with people of all ages.

  • Playful and enthusiastic: willing to have a little laugh and not take themselves too seriously.

  • Confident in character: comfortable waving, posing for photos and bringing a mascot to life without needing to speak.

  • Reliable: able to commit to the agreed sessions.

  • Safety-conscious: willing to follow guidance and work with the team to keep everyone safe and comfortable.

  • Practical: aged 18 or over and able to travel independently to event locations across Dorset and BCP.

You’ll also need to be comfortable wearing a mascot costume, which may be warm and physically demanding at times. Sessions will include suitable breaks.

What you’ll gain

  • The chance to make people smile and be part of a friendly, community-focused charity.

  • An opportunity to support food education and healthier lifestyles across Dorset.

  • Experience of helping at public events and engaging with diverse communities.

  • The satisfaction of making a visible difference — one wave, photo and broccoli-inspired dance at a time!

Time commitment

Event dates, locations and session lengths will be discussed before you confirm your commitment.

Support and safeguarding

You won’t be expected to manage events alone. A member of the Friendly Food Club team will coordinate your attendance, provide a briefing and explain the costume, safety arrangements and expectations for interacting with the public.

All volunteers must follow Friendly Food Club’s safeguarding procedures, staff instructions and event-specific risk assessments.

Safeguarding checks and references

As part of our commitment to safeguarding children and adults, volunteers will be required to complete an appropriate DBS check and provide references to help us establish their suitability for the role.

Interested?

If you’re enthusiastic, dependable and happy to have a little fun for a good cause, we’d love to hear from you.
