Social impact stories

Here's what some of our beneficiaries have to say.

Our sessions help people develop their cooking skills and confidence:

"These classes are great and are inspiring me to get cooking. The other day I cooked up a load of vegetables and made a nice meal for my housemates. I’m learning how to cook well and I’m also boosting my confidence with the Friendly Food Club and taking that away with me.”

"I think I've built my confidence cooking for myself now and so now making soups from the basic ingredients rather than buying tinned soup."

We help people to try new foods - even vegetables!

“I wasn’t going to eat it, then I tasted it and it was tasty!”

“I really learnt to use more vegetables and a greater use of pulses in cooking”

“I enjoyed my first FFC course so much I signed up for another and encouraged some more people I know to do it too. I really look forward to coming and I know they do. It’s such a fun and sociable group to be part of. Our tutor Andria is lovely and knows so much about cooking. She also knows that one of my daughters, like me, is an extremely fussy eater and she has given me lots of tips about how I can actually get vegetables into meals we will all like eating.”

We also help to reduce social isolation, including for the elderly and recently widowed or those with a disability that can limit social opportunities:

“I find talking to people difficult at times, but I forced myself to sign up to this and I’m so glad I did.”

“I enjoyed socialising – a common goal allowed me to talk to people and make LOTS of new friends.”

“I liked that I didn’t feel judged, cos that’s a big thing for me…if I feel like I’m being judged I won’t go… everyone got treated the same…I mean I’ve got the tattoos and people just stare at me but I didn’t feel judged”

“As soon as I came into the room it was really warm and inviting with a friendly atmosphere.”

“I was a little nervous about coming in at first, but I’m so glad I did. I sat with two ladies who had also lost their partners. We had such fun; it was like we’d known each other forever. The food we made was also delicious and we picked up some great cooking tips from Mark the tutor.”

“I have a disability and that means a lot of time at home. So, honestly, I have probably enjoyed the social aspect of the group as much as the cooking. I would highly recommend the Friendly Food Club.”

We're helping people improve their health outcomes:

“It’s brought me on a long way because I had no idea and I didn’t know where to start. Having a recipe and guidance of what ingredients to put together helped me balance my diet”

“When I was drinking, I was living on toast and noodles. These classes are great and are inspiring me to get cooking. The other day I cooked up a load of vegetables and made a nice meal for my housemates. I’m learning how to cook well and I’m also boosting my confidence with the Friendly Food Club and taking that away with me.”

"(You're) actually getting me to eat veg!”

“I’ve eaten more vegetables and healthy food. I feel better, my blood pressure is better and I’m more sociable.”

"I wasn’t sure about no meat, but every meal so far has changed my mind”

“I am gluten intolerant and have been thrilled with the tips I have picked up on the course. I’ve been able to follow healthy recipes, adapting them to my own needs, and using affordable ingredients. I am now signing up for the FFC’s Cooking on a Budget sessions, to learn even more.”

Our inclusive approach makes sure everyone can benefit:

“We saw a new side to J we've not experienced before. J rarely gets involved in activities. He thrived in the cookery and requested to take part in all three sessions.“

"T is another one who thrived, T struggles to have a free flowing conversation, yet can read and follow instructions. He tried new foods and has since shopped, cooked and eaten pasta at home too.”
