Support and care for your school community with cooking sessions

The Friendly Food Club partners with schools to offer tailored food education and cooking support.  Our sessions can support your pastoral objectives in many ways, but includes general food education, family communication, supporting struggling families or introducing new families into the community.

We can hold one-off, a series or regular indoor sessions and can also attend outdoor events such as school fairs.  We provide everything, from our experienced tutors and helpers to equipment, ingredients and induction hobs. All you need to provide is space, often the school hall, tables, sockets, washing facilities, and participants!

Themes can include, but not limited to:

  • Family meals using a slow cooker
  • Simple and quick family meals
  • Healthy snacks
  • Lunch boxes
  • Sensory fun for selective/picky eating

We would highly recommend that someone known and trusted from the school also attends and provides a support link for the families.

Parent's comments:

“The kids have tried different things and we worked together”

“Children are now more involved at prepping dinners at home”

“It’s very child-centred, supportive and enabling for me to boost my child’s confidence”

“It’s a big help to teach my child to cook healthy foods that will make habits for the future”

“My child tried different meals that she has refused to try at home”

“We’ve learnt new skills”

“It’s helped us to share together as a family more”

Each week The Friendly Food Club tutors demonstrate how to prepare the food allowing the children to ask questions and identify and talk about the individual ingredients

what do parents think?

A Headteachers comment:

“It has been wonderful to be able to offer our families something a little different and the feedback has been immensely positive.”

Ellie Griffiths, Headteacher at Wool CE Primary School

Families don't just build their cooking skills. They build their communication, confidence and self esteem, connections to others, and resilience. And they take their new knowledge, skills and experiences away with them to build healthier and more resilient families and communities.

Cooking is a platform for developing many more skills, too. We're not a skills training organisation, but we've created a skills map that shows how taking part in our sessions helps participants to develop lots of helpful employability and life skills, from communication to resilience and numeracy.

Hosting can bring multiple benefits for your organisation, from unlocking new forms of partnership funding to opening up new ways to help you deliver your own organisational objectives for the people you support.

Sessions do require funding from your organisation.  From helping to write co-funding bids to developing a programme tailored to your needs and evaluating session outcomes, we help every step of the way.  Sessions start from £250.

“The Friendly Food Club staff are amazing. They pitched the instructions at the correct level for the groups. Lots of practical demonstrations so that everyone knew what to do and all learning styles were covered.”

We can provide a parent and child engagement activity, often after-school smoothies, where we make smoothies for a free taster, which acts as a way for the parents to get to know us and talk with the team if they have any questions.

We can also offer an interactive food education assembly as part of a project, or teacher training.
